The Acacia class shows the small scale of an early sloop: roughly 1,200 tons, about 80 metres long, and designed around a 17-knot top speed. Its coal endurance was limited, and its armament changed repeatedly as duties changed. These modest dimensions suited a flexible working ship. It could be adjusted for the mission at hand without trying to serve as a miniature cruiser.
