Abruzzi class: a balanced Mediterranean light cruiser

Ten six-inch guns, layered belt protection, and 34-knot speed made the Abruzzi class among the strongest prewar light cruisers.

Notes

The Abruzzi design accepted a modest reduction in speed to combine ten six-inch guns with an outer 30 mm belt and an inner 100 mm belt, substantial turret protection, and useful secondary weapons. Its limited range mattered less in the Mediterranean than it would have for an oceanic navy. The layered scheme produced one of the most powerfully protected prewar light-cruiser designs while preserving about 34 knots. This balance of armament, protection, and speed came close to what Italy needed across more of its cruiser force.
