Why the French line at Aboukir Bay was vulnerable

An open bay, a long anchored line, and no constricted entrance left the French without the defensive advantages expected from a protected anchorage.

Notes

Rear Admiral Armand Blanquet du Chayla favored open water, where the fleet could maneuver or escape. Brueys instead anchored in Aboukir Bay to remain connected to Napoleon. The bay offered a broad entrance and weak natural barriers, leaving the long anchored line exposed to attack. A later order to move toward Corfu was intercepted, and Brueys would not act without it.
