The surviving remains show the scale of Aberystwyth's defensive architecture despite later damage. Their size explains why the fortifications were difficult to dismantle or ignore. D-shaped towers covered the gates, while the northern gate tower confronted anyone approaching that entrance. Reimagining the modern bridge as a drawbridge makes the difficulty of an assault easier to understand. Enough of Master James of St George's design survives to show how the towers and entrance worked together.
