Charles I adds a royal mint to Aberystwyth in 1637 to produce silver shillings. The valuable operation brings stronger security and physical upgrades to a castle already serving government. Its operator supplies a regiment of Royalist soldiers during the English Civil War. When minting stops during the war, the site remains useful as a warehouse for silver and lead. Parliament's forces slight the castle in 1649.
