The 1294-95 revolt and fortified borough

Aberystwyth's new defenses survive Madog ap Llywelyn's revolt, allowing a stable but distinctly colonial fortified settlement to grow around them.

Notes

Completed in 1289, the Edwardian castle faces a prolonged siege during Madog ap Llywelyn's revolt of 1294-95. It does not fall. That survival opens an unusual period of stability and urban growth around the fortress. The settlement's Welsh name identifies it as fortified and is interpreted as suggesting an English colonial borough with limited cultural integration. The town flourishes under the protection of the surviving castle.
