The castle's strategic value outlasted its best physical condition. In 1343 the Black Prince reports damaged gateways and drawbridges together with failing residential and service buildings. Owain Glyndŵr captures the stronghold in 1404 and uses it for a mutual-security treaty with France. English forces retake Aberystwyth in 1408, reinforce it, and restore its role in government. Charles I adds a royal mint in 1637, and its operator later provides a Royalist regiment. After minting stops during the Civil War, the site stores silver and lead. Parliament's forces slight the castle in 1649.
