Owain Gwynedd gives Aberystwyth to his younger brother Cadwaladr to rebuild. Cadwaladr then has Anarawd ap Gruffydd, who had succeeded Gruffydd ap Rhys as king, murdered. Owain responds by sending his son Hywel to burn the castle in 1143. Later reconstruction reinforces it in stone, although the builder is uncertain. The castle passes through three owners before Llywelyn the Great retakes it in 1221. Llywelyn, a prince who had come close to uniting Wales, razes the captured castle and builds a replacement.
