The Black Prince's 1343 report of disrepair

By 1343, damaged gateways and drawbridges stood alongside deteriorating domestic buildings at the castle that had survived the 1294-95 revolt.

Notes

By 1343, about fifty years after Madog ap Llywelyn's revolt, Aberystwyth was in serious disrepair. The Black Prince found damaged gateways and drawbridges. The king's hall and long chamber were in poor condition, and the kitchen range was falling down. The defects affected both the defenses and the buildings needed to live and work inside the castle.
