Abdiel class: speed, mines and a narrow design margin

The Abdiel class was built around high-speed offensive minelaying, but its later employment shows the risk of a specialist vessel with limited surface firepower.

Notes

The Royal Navy's experience with German mines in World War I and concern over a possible Far East war produced exceptionally fast minelayers. Too few entered service, and they arrived too late to shape the opening of a war around Singapore in the way imagined here. Each could carry 156 mines, while its speed and anti-aircraft battery also made the class useful for other assignments. Those extra missions exposed the weakness of narrow specialisation when a fast ship had limited surface firepower. Replacing or supplementing the four-inch weapons with dual-purpose 4.5-inch guns would have required a somewhat larger hull but provided a stronger all-round battery. Earlier adoption might also have accelerated the upper-deck 4.5-inch mounting later useful to Battle-class destroyers.
