How useful would Abdiel-class fast minelayers have been on the Tobruk Ferry Service?
Short answerTheir speed would make them useful transports, but the route's predictability would expose scarce, capable ships to mines and require careful sweeping.
NotesThe Abdiels could run quickly into and out of Tobruk. Speed, however, does not remove the danger of a repeated supply route whose destination and approach are known to the enemy. Mines can be laid in advance without an opposing force waiting for the ship at the moment of passage. Committing a fast minelayer also diverts a scarce asset from other missions that exploit its unusual capability. Rapid delivery therefore has to be balanced against route clearance, predictability, and opportunity cost.
