A 156-mine payload rather than a gunfighter's armament

The class carried anti-aircraft weapons but its decisive armament was up to 156 mines, enough to create a formidable field in one visit.

Notes

Four-inch guns and light anti-aircraft weapons gave the ships a defensive battery. They might deter aircraft or small attackers, while speed remained the answer to a serious surface threat. On the War Emergency Programme pair, one twin 4-inch mounting was exchanged for more 40 mm Bofors. The main offensive load was up to 156 mines. A Harwich Force field cited from the First World War contained 240 mines, so one Abdiel could lay roughly sixty percent of that total in a single run. That comparison explains why mine capacity mattered more than a conventional cruiser battery.
