803 Naval Air Squadron brings the Scimitar to sea

Operational training began with 803 Naval Air Squadron before the type embarked in HMS Victorious in September 1958.

Notes

803 Naval Air Squadron began operational training at Lossiemouth in June 1958 and embarked in HMS Victorious that September. The quick transition put the new jet into carrier service after only a short period of shore preparation. Commander John Russell, the squadron's commanding officer, was among the first fatal losses. His death connected the Scimitar's introduction directly with the landing accidents that would define its reputation. It also shows how an early accident could strip experience and leadership from a new squadron.
