Chapter · 39:51-42:44

Stealth, firepower, and the size of Baltic combatants

Reduced signatures still need supporting weapons, and fitting both into a Baltic combatant creates demands on hull size.

Notes

Pohjanmaa is judged close to the largest practical size for the Finnish waterways it must secure with current technology. Its firepower helps explain that size. Stealth remains useful, but avoiding detection cannot be assumed as missile and drone threats develop. A ship needs weapons for encounters in which signature reduction does not keep it hidden. Fitting those weapons while preserving a reduced signature consumes space. Visby and Skjold illustrate smaller designs whose operational usefulness still depends on their armament. The frigate-or-corvette label matters less to this argument than capability and sufficient hull numbers.
