Helgoland as a German political prize

Understand why recovering the island carried symbolic weight as well as strategic value.

Notes

The Helgoland-Zanzibar agreement appeared to be a major German success because it united German territory and compensated for political setbacks. The island's return could therefore carry symbolic weight beyond its small size or immediate military value. Some contemporary nationalist writing treated Danish and other Scandinavian lands through an expansive German lens, though those texts did not represent the majority German view. The passage also offers a source-reading lesson: the money and cooperation needed to publish a pamphlet, newspaper argument, or book can show that an idea attracted support. Publication alone does not prove that it was representative.
