Attrition before the Grand Fleet arrives

Learn why German ships would have to take losses from island defences before Britain needs to risk a fleet battle.

Notes

The likely clash combines elements of Heligoland Bight, Jutland, and the Battle of the Falkland Islands. German forces would have to advance through coastal-gun range while mines, submarines, torpedo boats, and destroyers imposed attrition. If they did not press hard enough to threaten the island, the Grand Fleet would have no reason to accept battle and could reinforce Helgoland on British terms. A distant blockade could therefore coexist with a close island-based squadron, forcing Germany to absorb losses before it could compel a decisive fleet engagement.
