A force with two armoured infantry brigades has little depth if it must keep one reliably available. The proposed alternative adds a third brigade as a reserve formation and applies the same idea to a reserve strike brigade. Combined with the infantry brigades, this could produce regular and reserve divisions organized around three brigades each. It would give reserve formations a place in the force-generation plan beyond supplying personnel to patch gaps in regular units.
