Chapter · 23:38-25:12

The 1910 dreadnought balance hides another response cycle

A worldwide fleet count leaves Britain ahead of Germany while the United States, Mediterranean powers, Japan, Spain, Australia, Brazil, and Argentina expand their dreadnought programs.

Notes

By 1910 the Royal Navy has ten dreadnoughts in service and eleven building, while Germany has four in service and eleven under construction. The United States stands at four and four, Brazil already has two in service, and Italy, France, Japan, Australia, Spain, and Argentina all appear in the expanding construction picture. The tally shows that the dreadnought race has become a global force-structure problem rather than only an Anglo-German contest. The apparent pause after 1909 reflects the time navies needed to study rivals and decide on their next construction response, with another round already taking shape for 1911.
